Who Will Build the Data Center Boom? The Growing Demand for Specialized Engineering Talent

Employers may need to look beyond traditional data center experience and focus on transferable technical skills from adjacent industries to find the talent they need. 

Data center growth is creating more than a need for new facilities. It is increasing demand for the engineers who design, build, power, cool, automate, commission, and operate them. 

The hiring challenge reaches beyond data centers themselves. Power generation, nuclear energy, battery storage, advanced manufacturing, automation, and other industries are drawing from many of the same specialized engineering talent pools. 

For employers, building the infrastructure may be only part of the challenge. Finding the people who can build and support it is becoming increasingly important. 

Data Centers Need More Than IT Talent 

Servers, networking, and computing may be at the heart of a data center, but they depend on a much larger physical infrastructure. 

Electrical systems need to deliver reliable power. Mechanical and thermal systems need to manage heat. Controls and automation keep equipment operating efficiently. Construction and commissioning teams bring new capacity online. Facilities and reliability professionals keep it running. 

That means data center hiring can span disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, power systems, thermal, controls, facilities, commissioning, systems integration, networking, construction, and technical program management. 

The challenge isn’t simply hiring more engineers. Many of the skills data centers need are already in demand elsewhere. 

The Infrastructure Behind Data Centers Is Expanding the Talent Competition 

Power is one clear example. The International Energy Agency projects that data centers will account for nearly half of U.S. electricity-demand growth through 2030. Globally, data center electricity consumption is expected to more than double by 2030. 

Meeting that demand requires infrastructure, and infrastructure requires engineering talent. 

Growing interest in nuclear energy, including small modular reactors, introduces highly specialized needs across nuclear systems, thermal-hydraulics, safety, instrumentation and controls, electrical systems, and related disciplines. 

Battery storage adds another layer, requiring expertise in power systems, electrical engineering, power electronics, controls, reliability, and systems integration. 

Inside the facility, increasingly dense computing environments place greater demands on cooling and thermal management. Automation, sensors, controls, and software are also becoming increasingly important for managing complex facilities, with robotics and autonomous technologies offering additional opportunities for monitoring, inspection, and maintenance. 

These aren’t separate workforce conversations. Together, they broaden the number of industries competing for technical expertise. 

The Same Engineers Are Needed Across Multiple Industries 

This is where data center growth becomes a particularly interesting recruiting challenge. 

Consider an electrical engineer with experience in complex power systems. A data center may need that expertise, but so might a utility, semiconductor manufacturer, advanced manufacturing facility, energy company, or infrastructure project. 

A controls engineer could potentially find opportunities across data centers, robotics, manufacturing, energy, semiconductor, and aerospace environments. 

Mechanical and thermal engineers are similarly important across industries where cooling, reliability, and complex physical systems matter. 

That doesn’t mean an engineer from one industry can automatically step into a specialized position in another. Specific technical knowledge, regulatory requirements, tools, and operating environments still matter. 

It does mean employers may be competing for talent across a much wider market than they realize. 

Direct Data Center Experience Can’t Be the Only Filter 

When specialized talent is difficult to find, narrowly defining the candidate pool can make the search even harder. 

Requiring direct data center experience may be necessary for some positions. For others, employers may benefit from asking a different question: 

What experience does this person actually need to succeed in the role? 

Depending on the position, relevant experience may come from adjacent technical environments. 

A semiconductor fab, for example, can expose engineers to complex facilities, demanding electrical and mechanical systems, automation, controls, reliability requirements, and tightly managed operating environments. 

Energy and nuclear professionals may bring relevant expertise in power systems, instrumentation and controls, safety, reliability, or large-scale infrastructure. 

Aerospace and defense professionals may have backgrounds in systems engineering, integration, testing, reliability, and mission-critical programs. 

Advanced manufacturing and robotics professionals may bring valuable experience with automation, controls, sensors, equipment, and integrated physical systems. 

The goal isn’t to lower technical requirements. It’s to distinguish between experience that is truly essential and experience that may be transferable. 

Technical Skills Matter More Than Job Titles 

Job titles can also make technical recruiting unnecessarily restrictive. 

Two engineers doing similar work may have different titles depending on the company or industry. Conversely, two people with the same title may have very different technical backgrounds. 

For employers, a stronger search starts by defining what the engineer will actually need to do. 

That may include questions such as: 

  • Which systems or technologies will they work with? 
  • What technical skills are essential from day one? 
  • Which tools, platforms, or equipment must they understand? 
  • Does the role require experience in a mission-critical environment?
  • Which industry-specific requirements are non-negotiable? 
  • Where could comparable experience exist outside the data center industry? 

Answering those questions helps separate genuine requirements from preferences that may unnecessarily shrink the candidate pool. 

It also gives recruiters a much clearer picture of whom they should be looking for. 

Specialized Recruiting Can Open the Talent Pool 

Recruiting across industries requires more than expanding a keyword search. 

The recruiter needs to understand enough about the technical work to recognize when experience from another environment may be relevant and when it isn’t. 

That distinction becomes increasingly important as data centers compete with energy, semiconductor, aerospace, manufacturing, robotics, and other industries for specialized engineers. 

A technical recruiting partner can help employers: 

  • Define the skills that are truly essential for the position. 
  • Identify adjacent industries where relevant experience may exist. 
  • Look beyond job titles when evaluating technical backgrounds. 
  • Reach professionals outside the employer’s immediate network. 
  • Preserve critical technical requirements without unnecessarily narrowing the search. 

This approach doesn’t make specialized engineers easier to find. It makes the available talent market easier to understand and search effectively.
