Engineering Resume Format: What Recruiters Want to See (With Examples)

The right engineering resume format won’t get you hired on its own, but the wrong one can keep a strong engineer from ever getting a call. Recruiters and hiring managers scan fast. In the Ladders eye-tracking study, recruiters spent an average of 7.4 seconds on the first look at a resume.

This guide shows the format our technical recruiters see work best, a template you can copy, and real bullet examples for mechanical, electrical, software and aerospace engineers.

What Should an Engineering Resume Look Like?

A good engineering resume looks simple. It’s one column, easy to scan, and puts your technical work up front. Here is the order we recommend:

  1. Header: name, city and state, phone, email, LinkedIn and, if relevant, GitHub or portfolio.

  2. Professional summary: two or three lines about what you do and what you’re best at.

  3. Technical skills: grouped by category.

  4. Professional experience: most recent first, with results in every bullet.

  5. Selected projects: optional, but very useful for early-career engineers or career changers.

  6. Education: degree, school, graduation year.

  7. Certifications and clearances: PE, EIT, Six Sigma, CSWP, security clearance status.

If you have less than two years of experience, move Education and Projects above Experience.

The Best Engineering Resume Format for ATS

Most companies use an applicant tracking system (ATS) to sort resumes before a person reads them. Fancy designs often break when the system reads them. To stay ATS-friendly:

  • Use a one-column layout. Avoid tables, text boxes, icons and skill bars.

  • Use standard headings like “Experience” and “Skills,” not creative ones like “My Journey.”

  • Pick a simple font such as Calibri, Arial or Garamond at 10 to 12 points.

  • Save as PDF unless the application asks for Word.

  • Use the same keywords as the job posting when they match your real experience.

  • Spell out acronyms once, for example “Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).”

Can an Engineering Resume Be 2 Pages?

Yes. Here is a simple rule:

Experience

Recommended length

Student, intern or new grad

1 page

2 to 10 years

1 to 2 pages

10+ years, lead or manager

2 pages

Federal, defense or academic roles

Follow the posting; these can run longer

A second page is fine if every line earns its place. If page two is mostly old roles or a long list of tools, cut it.

Professional Summary or Objective?

For most engineers, a professional summary works better than an objective. An objective says what you want. A summary says what you offer, and that’s what a hiring manager is looking for.

Weak objective: “Seeking a challenging engineering position where I can grow my skills.”

Strong summary: “Mechanical design engineer with 6 years in medical devices. Experienced in SolidWorks, GD&T and design for manufacturing, from concept through FDA design controls.”

An objective can still help if you’re changing industries or applying for your first internship. Keep it to one line and make it specific.

Engineering Resume Examples by Discipline

The formula for every bullet is the same: action + what you worked on + measurable result. What changes by discipline is the vocabulary a hiring manager expects to see.

Mechanical Engineering Resume Examples

  • Redesigned an injection-molded housing in SolidWorks, cutting part count from 7 to 4 and reducing unit cost 22%.

  • Applied GD&T per ASME Y14.5 to 40+ production drawings, reducing supplier nonconformances by 30%.

  • Ran FEA on a bracket assembly in ANSYS and validated results with physical testing, avoiding a costly tooling change.

Keywords to include: SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, GD&T, FEA, DFM, tolerance stack-up, prototyping.

Electrical Engineering Resume Examples

  • Designed a 6-layer mixed-signal PCB in Altium for a sensor module that passed EMC testing on the first spin.

  • Reduced power consumption 35% by redesigning the power management circuit for a battery-powered device.

  • Built automated test fixtures in Python and LabVIEW that cut board test time from 20 minutes to 4.

Keywords to include: Altium, OrCAD, schematic capture, PCB layout, signal integrity, EMC, power electronics, oscilloscopes.

Software Engineering Resume Examples

  • Rewrote a data pipeline in Python and Kafka, reducing processing time from 6 hours to 40 minutes.

  • Led migration of 12 services to Kubernetes on AWS, cutting infrastructure costs 18%.

  • Wrote embedded C firmware for an ARM Cortex-M device running FreeRTOS, shipping to 50,000+ units.

Keywords to include: languages, frameworks, cloud platforms, CI/CD, testing frameworks, and the scale of what you shipped.

Aerospace Engineering Resume Examples

  • Performed structural analysis on composite wing components using NASTRAN, supporting first-article qualification.

  • Authored verification test procedures for avionics software to DO-178C Level B requirements.

  • Supported AS9100 audit readiness by closing 25 corrective actions ahead of schedule.

Keywords to include: DO-178C, DO-254, AS9100, NASTRAN, composites, systems engineering, verification and validation, clearance status. For more, see the 5 skills aerospace engineers need now on our blog.

Engineering Resume Skills and Keywords

Group your skills so a recruiter can confirm your stack in seconds:

  • Languages: C, C++, Python, MATLAB, VHDL

  • Tools: SolidWorks, Altium, ANSYS, JIRA, Git

  • Hardware and test: oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, JTAG debuggers

  • Standards and methods: ISO 13485, ISO 26262, MISRA C, Six Sigma, FMEA

Then make sure your most important skills also appear inside your experience bullets. A skill on a list is a claim. A skill inside a result is proof.

How to Write an Engineering Resume With No Experience

If you’re a student or new grad, your projects are your experience:

  • Put Education and Projects at the top.

  • Treat capstone, lab, club and competition work like jobs: what you built, which tools you used, what happened.

  • Add relevant coursework only if it matches the role, for example “Control Systems” for a controls internship.

  • Include your GPA if it’s 3.0 or higher, or if the employer asks for it.

  • Keep it to one page.

Example: “Designed and built the suspension system for a Formula SAE car in SolidWorks, reducing unsprung weight 12% compared to the previous year’s design.”

Engineering Resume Format Checklist

  1. One column, standard headings, simple font

  2. Summary that says your discipline, industry and top skills

  3. Skills grouped by category

  4. Results in most bullets, with numbers where possible

  5. Keywords matched to the job posting

  6. Right length for your experience level

  7. Saved as PDF, named “FirstName-LastName-Resume.pdf”

  8. LinkedIn profile matches your resume (here’s how to optimize it)

Frequently Asked Questions

What font size is best for an engineering resume?
Use 10 to 12 points for body text and 14 to 16 points for your name.

Should I put my GPA on my resume?
Include it if you graduated in the last two or three years and it’s 3.0 or higher. After a few years of experience, you can remove it.

Should I use an engineering resume template from Canva or Word?
Word or Google Docs templates with one column are safest. Many design-heavy templates look good but don’t read well in applicant tracking systems.

Do I need a different resume for each job?
Keep one master resume and adjust your summary, skills order and top bullets for each role. It takes 10 minutes and makes a real difference.
