A clear engineering job description is the fastest way to get better candidates. It tells qualified engineers what they’ll actually work on, and it filters out people who aren’t a fit before anyone spends time on interviews.

Below are five copy-ready templates for the engineering roles hiring managers search for most: electrical, software, mechanical, aerospace and quality. Each one includes responsibilities, must-have and nice-to-have skills, and a salary benchmark from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Customize the brackets, cut what doesn’t apply, and you’ll have a posting ready in minutes.

What Makes an Engineering Job Description Work?

Before you copy a template, keep these rules in mind:

  • Use the title engineers search for. “Senior Electrical Engineer” beats “Hardware Ninja” or “Engineer III.”

  • Lead with the work. The first paragraph should say what the engineer will build, fix or own.

  • Limit must-haves to 4 to 6. Everything else is a nice-to-have. Long lists push good candidates away. An internal review at Hewlett-Packard, cited by Harvard Business Review, found women applied for promotions only when they met 100% of the listed qualifications, while men applied at about 60%.

  • Be specific about tools and standards. Engineers want to know the stack.

  • Include a pay range. As of July 2026, 27 U.S. jurisdictions had enacted pay transparency laws. Check the rules where you post.

  • Keep it to 400 to 700 words.

How to Customize Any Engineering Job Description

A template is a starting point. Before you post, sit down with the hiring manager for 15 minutes and answer:

  1. What will this engineer own in the first 6 to 12 months? Add it to “About the role.”

  2. What does success look like at 90 days? Use it to sharpen “What you’ll do.”

  3. Which skills are truly required on day one? Keep only those as must-haves.

  4. Is the experience requirement realistic? Don’t ask for more years in a technology than it has existed.

  5. Why would a great engineer choose us? Mission, technical challenge, growth, flexibility. Say it plainly.

Common Mistakes That Slow Down Engineering Hiring

  • Listing 15 required skills that describe a unicorn, not a real person.

  • Copying the same job description for every level, from junior to principal.

  • Leaving out location, work model or clearance requirements.

  • Hiding the pay range.

  • Using internal acronyms only your team understands.

If a role has been open for months, the job description is often part of the problem. We wrote about why traditional engineering hiring models fail and what to do instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should an engineering job description be?
Between 400 and 700 words. Long enough to explain the role, short enough for a busy engineer to read.

Should I list salary in an engineering job description?
Yes, when possible. Many states and cities require it, and it saves time for both sides.

What’s the difference between a job description and a job posting?
A job description is the internal document that defines the role. A job posting is the public version, written to attract candidates. Use the templates above for your posting.

Can a recruiter help write the job description?
Yes. A technical recruiter knows what candidates in each discipline look for and can tell you if your requirements match the market.
