We did it. Protingent’s first volunteer group kicked off our Q2 Community Service Program with a day at Food Lifeline, and I’m still thinking about it.
In just over an hour, our team packed 187 boxes of apples, nearly 7,500 pounds of food headed to families across Western Washington. Food Lifeline serves 13 counties. Seeing the scale of what one morning of effort could accomplish made everything feel very real, very quickly.
But honestly, the 7,500 pounds wasn’t the most important part of the day.
Why We Chose Food Lifeline
We partnered with Food Lifeline this quarter because of the direct impact they have on food insecurity in the communities where we live and work. This is not some distant issue. It affects our neighbors, our communities, and the same Western Washington areas our team returns to every day.
Being able to contribute in a hands-on way and actually see the impact was both humbling and motivating. Looking at pallets of packed boxes and knowing exactly where they’re going and who they’ll help changes the way you think about the work.
What Changed for our Team
What surprised me most was how quickly the energy shifted when you take a group of driven people out of their normal environment and put them somewhere completely different.
Huge thanks to Tim Bruce, Brent Hansen, and Chris Walsh for jumping in and making the day rewarding and genuinely fun. Watching everyone work together without dashboards, call queues, or nonstop Teams notifications was refreshing. People who don’t usually work side by side were solving problems together and laughing in ways I hadn’t seen before.
And that feeling followed us back to the office. Conversations that started at Food Lifeline continued long after we got back to our desks. There was more openness, more creativity, and more connection. I think that came from spending time together doing something that had nothing to do with quotas or deadlines and everything to do with helping people.
Meet Hank
Then there was Hank.
Hank is Food Lifeline’s Repack Coordinator and their longest-serving employee, with 27 years at the organization. Twenty-seven years of showing up every day for something he believes in.
That stayed with me.
We spend so much time talking about engagement, retention, and purpose-driven work. Hank simply lives it. Quietly and consistently. Nearly three decades of commitment to something bigger than himself.
That kind of example makes you stop and think.
Why This Is So Perfectly Protingent
Protingent has never felt like a typical staffing company, and I mean that as a compliment. We place engineers and technical professionals in industries that genuinely shape the future: aerospace, space exploration, medical devices, semiconductors, and AI. The people we place build things that improve lives, so staying connected to the communities around us matters.
We try to take care of our own team with that same mindset. Whether it’s pet insurance, flexible work structures, or our ESOP model that gives employees a real stake in the company, those choices reflect what we value.
Our Community Service Program comes from the same place. It reflects the idea that our responsibility goes beyond placements and invoices. We’re part of a larger community, and we want our team to feel connected to it.
Why Days Like This Matter
Days like this remind me why I love what I do.
Not every company launches a quarterly community service program. Not every leadership team sets aside time during a busy quarter to volunteer at a food bank instead of sitting in another pipeline review meeting. But Protingent has always been willing to do things differently because we believe strong culture leads to strong results.
Last week reminded me that great teams are not built only in meetings or performance reviews. They’re built in moments where people connect outside of their usual roles and spend time doing something meaningful simply because it matters.
I’m proud to be part of this team, and grateful for experiences that remind me why.
